Stunning

Wow, this is really beautiful piece of music. It has a nice free form sound to it. It really sounds like Andy McKee to me. My only gripe is the clipping when the guitar gets too loud. The part around 1:20 is sooo nice.
Great job :)

Boux responds:

yeah i should work a bit on the EQing :D
Andy Mckee!!!!!!! wow thanks for the compliment, i listen to him and Don Ross very often.

For me

Apparently I think backwards to most people. I prefered the ambient part opposed to the piano. I think the piano part was way too much of a contrast. Although it was still nice.
The pad in the beginning was absolutely beautiful. What did you use to make it? As for the piano, I think the pacing is too fast for the song.
Still don't take it too seriously if people don't like the begginning. Most wouldn't understand where you are coming from.

BinaryGuy responds:

well maybe i should just listen to people who get me.
i mean, if mozart listened to his peers he wouldn't have written so much music.

Great composition

Very impressive Mr. Orr. I have to admit, I haven't listened to any of your songs recently. I definitely was missing out though.
You have a really great composition here. Something you'd hear in a videogame I'd say. I honestly see nothing wrong with it, but I'm no expert.

The only problem I have with this track is in its mixing. I think it would sound better with a little less reverb. Its perfect on the orchestration parts, and even the piano. But the drums I think would sound better and not as muddy with less reverb. But thats just my 2 cents

Great work :)

DavidOrr responds:

Hey Sine Rider! The drums are actually almost completely dry- except for the toms. Looking back into the mix I think I did get a little carried away on those toms, when I do my revision I'll look back into their levels. Written in my notes!

Great suggestions, thanks for the comments!

Wow

This is quite amazing. At first I thought it was gunna be similar to a kingbastard style acoustic-electronic song.

I love that pad, very simple and perfect. I like using chords like that. I really want to know how you did those vocals. They're amazing. Reminds me of Radiohead on the Kid A album. Is it just layered?

The whole song is really layered. There is a ton of stuff going. I could listen to this over and over and find something new to marvel at each time.

snayk responds:

Thanks for the review, man. You've got some awesome stuff.

Yeah, I love simplicity in pads. I also like taking something minimal and making it part of something much bigger.

The vocals: What you're hearing is a vocoder. I recorded myself singing the lyrics and added some chorus and distortion to that. The carrier is a simple 3xOsc saw-triangle-saw with no effects on it. I kept the modulator quite dry because I wanted to hear my native voice in the vox. On the vocoder, I played with the form a little bit so that it sounds like I'm singing with someone who has a higher voice, and the only effect on that channel is dblue glitch which was used for slight distortion, bitcrushing, retriggering, stretching, and slowdown.

I like being compared to Radiohead :D

Thanks again for dropping a review. I appreciate it. Glad you liked.

Been listening to this one for awhile...

I got it back when you put up your Hello-Fi album. Wow that must of been awhile ago, but damn that album is amazing...

Kingbastard responds:

yeah that was sometime in 2007 i think:D this is a slighly revamped version production-wise:) Cheers for reviewing man,

interesting

I like the piano in the beginning. It was written very well, something I can't do XD. I think it would sound better with a fuller sounding piano. Take off whatever EQ you did on the piano.

The rockout groove part was cool. I like the distorted guitarlike-synth. It definitely added towards the songs sound. I like when the drums pickup and you can really feel the groove, near the end.

I think this is really missing something. You say your writing lyrics. Maybe the addition of vocals could help fill in the mix. Overall the song is very good and well made. It's not my favorite by you, but its close.

RyeGuyHead responds:

I thought eqing the highs on the piano brought it out more...

Very Nice

Wow this beat is really nice. I love that little sample going through the song. The beat sounds nice, but i think you should work on EQing and mixing a bit more. The song is a bit crippled by this. First of all, i think you should add a subbass into the mix. Its missing low frequencies.

The rapping is good. Also th singing is nice too. Very professional sounding. I could definitely hear this playing on the radio.. well maybe a bunch of years back. Just keep at it guys.

jerseyendless responds:

we'll talk to our producer about that, but thanx for the review my dude.

Wow, what a classic!

Haven't heard this song in quite sometime. Its brings me back. It still hard to believe this is from 2003. That's before i ever started making music. Makes me feel real young.

I love how fixed everything is. Its really tight. Especialy when the drums cut out at 0:50. I just love that.

Kingbastard responds:

makes me feel real old
I'm quite pleased with this re-master, sounds miles better than the original, and about a thousand times better than in the animation where it was crushed beyond all belief:P
Cheers for the review man.

Lovely

Gotta love that oldschool Videogame Jazz. Nothing can beat it. I guess either jazz or videogame fits this the best. Anyways, the song is really nice. You do some justice, but while adding a bit of your own to it.

I think the lead was a bit too harsh for it, but still, I like the delay on it, and when the song cuts out and its just the lead, it sounds awesome. I think you should try adding a bit to the drum, and work on the bass. It was an octave too low, so it just comes out bad.

Overall good work. Keep it up.

Mr-Roc-a-fella responds:

The end was accidental I wanted the whole sone to cut out at the same time. I was also serching for a loud bass all the ones I found were too quiet. So I opted for that one. Thanks for the advice.

Damn...

I love how every time i listen to one of your songs, I'm put in awe. Its happens very rarely on NG these days, with all the bland music coming through. Its really nice to see something different in the pool of genericism (is that a word?)

Really, that is a beautiful pad. Fatkid doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. The chord progression was awesome. Perfectly matched chords. I love the little lead twitches and bends. The lead as really metallic sounding, actually.

Good luck in the MAC. Hopefully you'll do good. I mean this is one of the few that excludes pianos and strings XD

VegetarianMeat responds:

Thanks a lot man, I'm really glad you liked the song :) Here's hoping we both do well in the contest :D
